In a world with cell phones, PDA’s, and Instant messengers, technology has made it easier and faster to communicate. Allowing us to keep in touch with friends and families anywhere, anytime with the push of a button. But, with social networking sites such as Myspace, Facebook and Friendster, have we become dissocialized? We post everything about our personal lives on our webpage’s from what music we listen to, where we go to hang out to how many times a week we change our underwear. We advertise things we would normally confide in our best friends about in blogs. Telling everyone everything from how what a jerk our boss is to the lover you just caught cheating on you to how much you hate Britney. We post bulletins with dozens of surveys about our love lives, our favorite things or weather or not we’ve slept with anyone in our top 4. We populate our friends list with hundreds of people we don’t know, never speak to and have no intention of responding to their emails. There are even users who browse profiles for hours looking for that all mighty booty call. Eliminating the need to mingle in a singles bar, or make a run down to the street to pick up a hooker. No longer do we have boundaries. Nothing is sacred anymore. Have we lost our sense of what socializing means? Would people rather send dozens of messages to every girl or guy within 20 miles of there zip code saying, “Hey your hot lets screw!”, instead of tracking down your best friend from high school or keeping in touch with your friends?
Now there are dozens of these sites, and you can find one for just about anything you want. Need a drug dealer, check the web. Are your horney tonight? Go surf Cherry Tap or Xpeeps. Wanna find the crazy cat lady club, check out Myspace groups. And hey, why not post those nudey pics your ex took and tell everyone on the net just how freaky you get in the bedroom. It seems through these social sites, we’re becoming less and less social. Coming home after work and spending the entire evening on the computer. We don’t take the time to get to know each other anymore by spending time together. Why bother, when it’s all right there on the web? Everything you ever wanted to know about a person, or not, all right there with the click of your mouse.
But then there are people like myself, who utilize these sites to keep in touch with those I care about. To find lost loves and friends. To post cute comments and funny graphics, just cause I want to make someone smile.
What about you? What do you prefer to use this tool of tech for?
